چکیده

This paper introduces a fast non-rigid registration method for aligning pre-operative 1.5 T MR images to intra-operative 0.5 T MR images for guidance in prostate biopsy. After the acquisition of both pre-operative 1.5 T and intra-operative 0.5 T, an intensity correction method is applied to the pre-operative images to reduce the significant artifacts in the signal intensities due to the presence of an endo-rectal coil. A fast manual segmentation of prostate in both modalities is carried out to enable conformal mapping of the surface of the pre-operative data to the intra-operative data. A displacement field is estimated with a linear elastic inhomogeneous material model using the surface displacements established by the conformal mapping. We then use this as an initialization for a mutual information based non-rigid registration algorithm to match the internal structures of the prostate. This non-rigid registration is based on a finite element method discretization using the mutual information metric with a linear elastic regularization constraint. The registration is accelerated while preserving accuracy by using an adaptive mesh based on the body-centered cubic lattice and a significantly improved registration is achieved.

MRI-Guided Prostate Motion Tracking using Multislice-to-Volume Registration

MRI-guided prostate needle biopsy requires compensation for organ motion between target planning and needle placement. Two questions are studied and answered in this work: is rigid registration sufficient in tracking the targets with a maximum error of 3 mm (smaller than average prostate tumor size) and how many intra-operative slices are required to obtain this accuracy? We developed rigid and...

Optimization of clinical target volume delineation using magnetic resonance spectroscopic imaging (MRSI) in 3D conformal radiotherapy of prostate cancer

Background: For the purpose of individual clinical target volume assessment in radiotherapy of prostate cancer, MRSI was used as a molecular imaging modality with MRI and CT images. Materials and Methods: The images of 20 prostate cancer patients were used in this study. The MR and MRSI images were registered with CT ones using non-rigid registration technique. The CT based planning (BP), CT/MR...

Improving supervised classification accuracy using non-rigid multimodal image registration: Detecting Prostate Cancer

Computer-aided diagnosis (CAD) systems for the detection of cancer in medical images require precise labeling of training data. For magnetic resonance (MR) imaging (MRI) of the prostate, training labels define the spatial extent of prostate cancer (CaP); the most common source for these labels is expert segmentations. When ancillary data such as whole mount histology (WMH) sections, which provi...

Hierarchical Image Registration for Improved Sampling during 3T MRI-guided Transperineal Targeted Prostate Biopsy

Introduction Prostate cancer (PCa) is one of the most common cancer types in men in the USA. Diagnosis and staging of PCa relies on the histological analysis of biopsied prostate tissue samples. Joint use of multi-parametric MRI (mpMRI) (T2, DWI, DCE) results in improved detection of prostate cancer, while the use of MRI for biopsy guidance leads to superior accuracy of needle targeting. A chal...

Image-directed, tissue-preserving focal therapy of prostate cancer: a feasibility study of a novel deformable magnetic resonance-ultrasound (MR-US) registration system

OBJECTIVE To evaluate the feasibility of using computer-assisted, deformable image registration software to enable three-dimensional (3D), multi-parametric (mp) magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)-derived information on tumour location and extent, to inform the planning and conduct of focal high-intensity focused ultrasound (HIFU) therapy. PATIENTS AND METHODS A nested pilot study of 26 consecut...
